Our Approach

At Clarendon Nursery we conduct our nursery following the Montessori philosophy and approach to education.

The Montessori Method of education was developed by an Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori {1870-1952}. Dr. Montessori developed her method of educational philosophy as a result of observations of the way children naturally learn. Her methods are to help children to feel relaxed and comfortable which create a will to learn. Through this interaction and experience the children develop an extraordinarily high level of intellectual and social ability at young ages. Montessori believed that children are at liberty to choose and act freely within a prepared environment and they would act spontaneously for optimal development.

As Montessori said, each child has an Absorbent Mind and therefore they learn and absorb information from their senses, language & culture and this develops during early childhood.

Children have Sensitive Periods within their lives during which they have the capacity for the acquisition of language, their interest in small objects, for order, sensory refinement and social behaviour.

Following the Montessori philosophy our nursery room brings children together in multi age groups. The children learn in different ways and progress at their own pace. This method of education is consciously designed to recognise and address different styles of learning and supports our children in learning more effectively. Children learn through hands on experiences and investigation. This in turn enables them to become actively engaged in their activities. Children learn not to be afraid of making mistakes, also known as the Control of Error in Montessori education and therefore take natural steps in their learning process.

If you would like more information Maria Montessori wrote several books on the Montessori Method of Education and Child Development: The Absorbent Mind, Secret of Childhood, Discovery of the Child, to name but a few.
